Sly’s Little Sister: The Funk Legacy of Vet Stone | Global

From Church Choir to Center Stage

Before she was the heartbeat of Little Sister, Vet Stone was the youngest of the Stewart siblings, growing up immersed in gospel music at All Nations Church of God in Christ. Her musical journey was shaped by family, faith, and fire.

Sly Stone

The Birth of Little Sister

The group Little Sister was a female trio organized by Sly Stone consisting of Vaetta Stewart (Sly’s little sister of course), Mary McCreary and Elva Mouton. The group had two Top Ten R&B singles. “You’re the One-Part 1” reached #4 on the R&B charts in early 1970 and “Somebody’s Watching You” reached #8 in late 1970. These singles captured the spirit of Sly & The Family Stone’s album There’s A Riot Goin’ On, released in 1971.

Little Sister was involved from the first Family Stone album A Whole New Thing and subsequently sang backup on many of the group’s records, notably on the album Fresh. Their voices shine on The Essential Sly & The Family Stone collection, with remastered tracks highlighting their contributions.

Many fans believe Little Sister released a full album, but in reality, only four singles were released:

  • “You’re the One” Pt. I
  • “You’re the One” Pt. II
  • “Stanga”
  • “Somebody’s Watching You””

With a blend of fearless harmonies, syncopated grooves, and powerful storytelling, Little Sister became a vital extension of the Sly & The Family Stone sound—grounded in rhythm, resistance, and soul.

All were written, arranged, and produced by Sly. Notably, “Somebody’s Watching You” was the first popular track to use a drum machine—later known as the rhythm box or funk box—predating its widespread use. The same machine appeared on “Family Affair,” the #1 hit from There’s a Riot Goin’ On.

All singles were released on Sly’s Stoneflower label via Atlantic Records. Other Stoneflower artists included Joe Hicks and 6ix.

The Funk Continues

Decades later, the music of Little Sister continues to inspire. Vet brings these timeless songs back to the stage through Rose Stone & The First Family of Funk. Each performance bridges eras and generations.

A Memoir

A Memoir of Truth and Triumph

Vet Stone shares her deeply personal and historical perspective in her book “Blood is Thicker than Mud”. The memoir chronicles her life alongside Sly Stone, the evolution of the funk genre, and her spiritual awakening. It’s a rare, raw, and resonant piece of music history from one of its most important voices.

“Being Little Sister means more than just being the baby sister. It means carrying the weight and joy of a movement that changed the world.” – Vet Stone
