Honoring the Origins of a Movement
The story of Rose Stone & The First Family of Funk begins with a household steeped in gospel, harmony, and resilience. In Vallejo, California, the Stewart family formed The Stewart Four under the spiritual guidance of their parents and the leadership of their Uncle Richard and Aunt Rosalie Garrett. Music wasnโt just entertainmentโit was their ministry, discipline, and joy.
Sylvester Stewart: The Original Funk Architect
Born in Denton, Texas, in 1943, Sylvester Stewart (later known as Sly Stone) emerged as a visionary who fused soul, rock, gospel, and funk into an entirely new sound. His prodigious talent saw him mastering guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and vocals before graduating high school. In 1967, he launched Sly & The Family Stone and forever transformed American music with anthems like “Stand,” “Family Affair,” and “Everyday People.” His influence remains etched into pop culture, from Woodstock to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Women Behind the Music: Rose & Vet Stone
Rose Stone, Slyโs sister, is a founding member of Sly & The Family Stone, lending her powerful vocals and keyboard stylings to some of the bandโs most iconic performances. Vet Stone, the youngest Stewart sibling, later joinedย Sly & The Familyย Stone and fronted the dynamic vocal group Little Sister, which was formed by Sly as a powerful complement to Sly & Family Stone. With hits like “You’re the One” and “Somebody’s Watching You”, Vet helped shape the narrative of women in funk. She later chronicled her journey in the book “Blood is Thicker than Mud”, offering rare insights into the personal and professional life of this iconic family
